Pubs that are no
more
There used to be, I believe, thirteen
drinking places in Croston. Over half have ceased to exist or
have been converted back to houses. This page will try to bring
back some happy memories. If anyone has any information or photographs
please let me post them on the web. You can contact me by clicking
here. Select the picture for a larger version.
A number of Pubs were opened to provide
lodgings and "sustenance" for the railway workers of
which there were many and for that reason had a reasonably short
life span.
Thanks to Derek Alty for the information
here.

The Horseshoe
Situated opposite the Grapes, backing on to the river.
It had to be demolished when Town Rd was widened. |

THE SPREAD EAGLE
Grape Lane - large white house
on the right hand side, just past the entrance to the Croft and
immediately across the road from the terrace (which used to be
rented by staff at the Hall). This was called the Spread Eagle
(I believe). Later became a basket works owned by Benthams. |

THE RAILWAY
Corner of Westhead Road - Terraced House
next to the Garage and immediately across from what was the TSB.
I am unaware of the name but was used principally as lodgings
for the railway workers and has only a beer licence.

THE PLOUGH
Station Road - Large detached house
next to Square Fold i.e. just past what used to be the Veg Patch.
Again unsure of the name eventually became a Chip Shop eventually
run by a family who had a son who was referred to as "Soapy"
who had quite a reputation and played with some success for Croston
Rangers when they won the Guildhall Cup (regretably he did not
appear in the final eleven).
